Dynamic NFC vs Traditional NFC Cards: What Happens When You Need to Change the Link?
Every NFC card looks identical from the outside: a plain plastic card with an invisible chip inside. The difference that actually matters is invisible too, and it only shows up the first time you need to change what the card does.
Traditional (static) NFC
A traditional NFC card is programmed once, at the point of manufacture, with a link written directly onto the chip. That link is permanent. If your Google Business Profile URL changes, if you rebrand, or if you simply want the card to point somewhere new, there is no way to update it: the chip physically holds the old link forever. The only fix is discarding the card and ordering a new one.
Dynamic NFC
A dynamic NFC card is programmed differently: instead of writing your destination link directly onto the chip, the chip is programmed with a permanent PrintOnline-hosted redirect URL. That redirect URL is what actually sits on the card, unchanging, for the card's entire physical life. What changes is which destination the redirect currently points to, and that's controlled from a dashboard, not the card itself.
What happens when you need to change the link
| Static NFC | Dynamic NFC | |
|---|---|---|
| Change the destination | Not possible; order new cards | Update instantly from the dashboard |
| Physical card | Discarded and replaced | Stays in use unchanged |
| Cost of a change | Full reprint and reprogramming cost | No additional cost; included in dashboard access |
| Speed of a change | Days, waiting on a new order | Immediate |
Why this matters in practice
Businesses change more than they expect to over a card's lifetime: a new Google Business Profile after a rebrand, a second location that needs its own link, a temporary redirect to a feedback form during a service issue, or simply deciding to point the same card at Instagram for a seasonal campaign instead of Google. Every one of these is a non-event on a dynamic card and a full reorder on a static one.
Change destination
PrintOnline's Google Review NFC Card is built as a dynamic card specifically so the destination can be updated after delivery through the My NFC Cards dashboard, without reprinting or reprogramming the physical card.
Keep the physical card, keep the printed QR
Because the QR code printed on the card encodes the same redirect URL as the NFC chip, updating the destination in the dashboard updates what both the tap and the scan point to, at the same time, without touching the physical card or its printed code at all.
Multiple cards, card labels
A business managing more than one card (different staff, different counters, different branches, as covered in the car workshop use case) can label and organise each card individually within the same dashboard account, rather than treating every card as a separate, disconnected purchase.
Analytics
Tap analytics on a dynamic card show engagement over time, since the redirect server can log each visit. A static card, by contrast, offers no way to know whether it's being used at all, short of watching your review count and guessing at the cause.
Active / disabled
A dynamic card can be switched off centrally through the dashboard if it's lost, damaged, or retired, rather than left permanently pointed at your review page with no way to control it, which is the position a lost static card leaves you in.
Dashboard
All of the above (destination changes, analytics, active/disabled status, and multi-card management) live in one place: the My NFC Cards dashboard, the layer that turns a plain NFC chip into an ongoing, adjustable tool rather than a one-time print job.
What this article isn't
This is a technology explainer, not another product listing. For ordering, see the Google Review NFC Card product page directly, which lists the card's dashboard capabilities in full. The finer operational details, such as exactly how quickly a destination change propagates or the full depth of the analytics shown, are not published, so if any of that is central to your decision, confirm it with PrintOnline via WhatsApp on +971 52 383 1019 before ordering at volume.
