Digital vs Offset Brochure Printing: Cost, Quantity and Turnaround

By Sonam S. July 9, 2026 3 Views No comments

Digital and offset are two different ways of getting ink onto paper, and which one prints your brochure is decided almost entirely by quantity, not by any choice you make directly. Understanding why helps you plan quantity rather than be surprised by a price jump.

How they differ

Digital printing transfers your file directly to paper, sheet by sheet, with no physical plates and essentially no setup cost. Offset printing burns your file onto metal plates, one per ink colour, then runs paper through rollers that transfer ink from those plates. Plates cost time and money to produce, but once made, offset presses print each additional sheet far more cheaply than digital does.

The crossover point

On PrintOnline's tri-fold brochure, printing is digital at 100 and 250 copies and switches to offset at 500 copies and above. That is the crossover point for this product: below it, digital's zero setup cost wins; above it, offset's lower per-sheet cost wins.

Real pricing comparison

QuantityMethodTotal (AED)Per piece (AED)

1,000Offset5400.54
2,000Offset7350.37
5,000Offset1,3500.27

Two things stand out. Between 250 and 500 copies, the total price barely moves (AED 430 to AED 490) while the quantity nearly doubles, because that step crosses into offset. And per-piece cost keeps falling all the way to 5,000 copies, from AED 2.35 down to AED 0.27, an almost ninefold drop.

Quantity: which method should you plan around

  • Under 250 copies: digital is your only realistic option and is well suited to it. Good for a single event, a short-lived campaign, or testing a design before a larger commitment.
  • 250 to 500 copies: check both. If your real need sits at 300 to 400, ordering the full 500 is very often cheaper than 250, because of the crossover.
  • 500 copies and above: offset, and the per-piece economics improve steadily as quantity rises. This is the range for ongoing company brochures, exhibition stock, and anything you will be handing out for months.

Turnaround

PrintOnline's tri-fold brochure quotes 3 to 5 working days standard production at 500 copies and above, with an urgent 24-hour option available for a surcharge of AED 25 or AED 50 depending on the order. Offset's plate-making step does not typically add meaningful time at these volumes; the production window is driven more by press scheduling and finishing (lamination, trimming) than by print method itself.

Quality

Both methods print CMYK to a professional standard on this kind of run. Offset traditionally has an edge on large flat colour areas and very high-volume colour consistency; digital has closed most of that gap for typical brochure photography and text. For a business brochure, the print method itself is rarely the thing a reader notices, quantity and lamination choice matter more visually.

Practical takeaway

Decide your real quantity need first, then check the price at the tier just above it. If you are anywhere near a round number like 250 or 500, the crossover point often makes the larger quantity the better value, not just the safer buffer.
