How to Prepare Your Logo for Custom Paper Cup Printing

A paper cup is a tricky print surface: it's curved, it's small, and there's no room to fix mistakes after production runs. Getting your artwork right before you submit it saves time and avoids a reprint.

Vector vs raster

Vector artwork (built from scalable paths rather than a fixed grid of pixels) is strongly preferred for logo printing, since it stays sharp at any size and on any curved surface. A raster image (a standard photo or PNG-style file) can work if it's high enough resolution, but tends to lose sharpness once printed at cup scale, particularly around fine detail or small text.

PDF, AI, EPS

PDF, AI (Adobe Illustrator), and EPS are the standard vector file formats accepted for professional print work. If your logo was originally designed by an agency or freelancer, ask them for one of these formats rather than only a JPG or PNG, which are raster formats.

SVG

One caveat on file types: the product page asks for "one of the accepted artwork formats" without listing them, so SVG specifically is not confirmed. SVG is a vector format and is usually interchangeable with AI, EPS or PDF for print, but send your artwork over and have it checked before you rely on an SVG as your only file.

CMYK

Print production uses CMYK colour (cyan, magenta, yellow, black), not the RGB colour mode used for screens. If your logo file is in RGB, colours can shift once converted for print, sometimes significantly for bright or saturated brand colours, so it's worth converting your file to CMYK yourself or flagging your exact brand colour codes to PrintOnline's design team.

Resolution

If you're submitting a raster file rather than vector artwork, use as high a resolution as you have available, ideally 300 DPI at the actual print size, since a low-resolution logo scaled up will look blurry or pixelated once printed onto the cup.

Bleed

Bleed is the small margin of extra artwork extended past the actual cut or wrap line, so that no unintended white edge shows if the print shifts slightly during production. If you're supplying your own print-ready file rather than using PrintOnline's design service, ask what bleed allowance they require before finalising your artwork.

Curved print surface

Unlike a flat sheet of paper, a cup's printing surface wraps around a cone shape, which can distort a design that wasn't created with this in mind, particularly text or shapes positioned near the top or bottom edge. Keep important elements (your logo, key text) closer to the centre of the printable area, and avoid designs that rely on perfectly straight lines running the full height of the cup.

Logo size

A simplified version of your logo, focused on its core shape or wordmark, generally reproduces better at small cup scale than a highly detailed version. If your logo has a lot of fine detail or small type, consider a simplified variant specifically for cup printing.

Artwork proof

Before full production, request a proof or mockup of your logo positioned on the actual cup template, so you can check size, placement, and colour before the print run starts. This is the point to catch problems, not after 100 or 500 cups have already been printed.

Common artwork mistakes

• Submitting a low-resolution raster file instead of vector artwork
• Sending an RGB file without flagging exact brand colour codes for CMYK conversion
• Placing fine detail or small text too close to the cup's top or bottom edge, where the curved surface can distort it
• Skipping the proof step and only spotting an error once the full order has been printed
• Using an overly detailed logo that doesn't simplify well at small print scale
