How to Print a Photo on a Mug in Dubai

Printing a photo on a mug looks simple from the outside: upload a picture, pay, wait for the box. What decides whether the finished mug looks good is everything that happens before the press closes. The photo you pick, its resolution, how it is cropped, and where it sits on the 94 x 200 mm print area matter more than anything else. This guide walks through the whole process as it actually works in Dubai, from choosing the image to approving the mockup and receiving the mug.

What photo mug printing is

Photo mug printing puts your own image permanently onto a ceramic mug using sublimation, a heat-transfer process. Your photo is printed in reverse onto a coated transfer sheet, the sheet is wrapped around the mug, and the mug goes into a press at high temperature. The ink turns to gas, bonds into the mug's coating, and cools as part of the surface rather than as a layer sitting on top. That is why a sublimated photo mug does not peel like a sticker and survives normal washing.

How to choose the photo

The single biggest difference between a mug that people keep on their desk and one that goes into a cupboard is photo choice. A few rules that hold up every time:

• Pick a photo with a clear subject. A mug is a small, curved surface. Group shots taken from a distance turn into a row of unrecognisable faces. Faces should be reasonably large in the frame.
• Prefer good light over a good camera. A well-lit phone photo prints better than a dark photo from an expensive camera. Sublimation cannot recover detail that is not in the file.
• Avoid heavy filters. Filters that crush shadows or push saturation look striking on a phone screen and muddy on ceramic.
• Watch the background. Busy backgrounds compete with the subject on a small print area. Simple backgrounds read better.
• Do not use screenshots of photos, or images saved from WhatsApp. Both are re-compressed and lose resolution. Send the original file.

Photo resolution and cropping

The print area is 94 mm tall by 200 mm wide. To print cleanly at that size you want an image of roughly 2360 x 1110 pixels or larger, which is what 300 dpi works out to across a 200 x 94 mm area. Most modern phone photos are well above this, so resolution is usually only a problem when the image has been forwarded through messaging apps, cropped down heavily, or taken from a website.

Cropping is where most photo mugs are won or lost. The print area is a wide, short strip: proportionally it is a little over 2:1. A normal phone photo is 4:3 or 3:4, so something has to give. You have three sensible options:

• Crop the photo to the panel shape and accept that the top and bottom of the original image will be cut. Best for landscape photos and close-up portraits.
• Place the photo as a panel on one part of the mug with a background colour filling the rest of the strip. Best for portrait-orientation photos, which do not fit the strip at all.
• Use two or three photos side by side across the strip, which suits the shape naturally.

A collage is possible and there is no fixed limit on the number of images, but every image you add gets smaller, and past about four or five photos individual faces stop being readable. Collage layouts need to be supplied as ready artwork rather than as a folder of loose photos.

How the photo is positioned on the mug

The mug is printed on the outer cylindrical body only, and the printable strip stops roughly one inch clear of each side of the handle. Nothing prints inside the mug, on the base, or on the handle itself. That leaves a continuous wrap-around strip on the side opposite the handle.

Because a right-handed and a left-handed drinker see opposite sides, most photo mugs place the main image centred on the strip so it is visible from both sides, or duplicate a smaller image on the left and right halves. If your photo must face a specific direction when held in the right hand, say so in the order comments so the layout is built that way.

A 3 to 5 mm clear margin along the top and bottom edge is mandatory. Artwork cannot bleed off the top or bottom rim. If your design has a background colour or a full-bleed photo, it will still finish a few millimetres short of the rim, and that is a physical requirement of the process, not a design choice.

What 94 x 200 mm means

These are the dimensions of the flat artwork before it is wrapped onto the curved mug: 94 mm is the height up the side of the mug, 200 mm is the distance around the body. Design your file at exactly that size in CMYK and everything downstream behaves predictably.

Two practical consequences worth understanding. First, because the strip wraps around a cylinder, only about a third of it is visible from any one viewing angle, so a single image spanning the entire 200 mm will never be seen whole. Second, once you subtract the 3 to 5 mm margins, the usable height is closer to 84 to 88 mm, so text and faces should be positioned with that in mind rather than pushed to the edges.

How sublimation mug printing works

In short: print, wrap, press, cool. Your artwork is printed with sublimation inks onto transfer paper, the paper is taped tightly around the coated mug, and the mug is clamped in a heat press for a few minutes at around 180 to 200 degrees. Heat and pressure convert the solid ink directly into gas, which penetrates the polymer coating on the mug. When the mug cools, the ink is locked inside the surface.

Three things follow from this that are worth knowing before you order. Sublimation prints in four-colour CMYK, so it cannot match a specific Pantone, and metallic and gold cannot be printed at all. White is not an ink; wherever your design is white, you are seeing the mug body through, which is why white text only works on a coloured background. And because the result depends on temperature, humidity, pressure and timing, two mugs from different production runs can differ slightly in colour. How to order a photo mug online

1. Open the mug printing Dubai product page and choose the mug type: plain white, magic, black with white panel, or frosted.
2. Select the quantity. Pricing is tiered, so the per-mug cost drops sharply with volume.
3. Upload your photo, or upload print-ready artwork built at 94 x 200 mm in CMYK with the 3 to 5 mm top and bottom margins.
4. If different mugs need different images, select the different-print option and upload one clearly labelled file per mug.
5. Choose production speed and delivery, and check the delivery date the calculator shows before you pay.
6. Add individual mug boxes at AED 1 each if the mugs are gifts. By default mugs ship without individual boxes.
7. Approve the mockup. Production starts only after approval.

For a single mug you can also order a non-printed sample white mug for AED 5 to check the size and feel first, and on quantity orders you can ask in the comments box for one printed sample to be photographed on WhatsApp before the rest of the run is produced. How much a photo mug costs in Dubai

How delivery works in Dubai

Standard production is 5 working days. Urgent production at 3 working days and urgent dispatch at 2 working days are available for an extra charge. Production time starts from mockup approval, not from payment, and the delivery date calculator on the product page already allows one working day for print file preparation and approval.

Once produced, you can take courier delivery within 1 to 2 days across Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman city limits and the other emirates, or a special driver at AED 50 for delivery within 6 hours of production, or AED 150 within 10 hours. Free collection from the Sharjah facility is also available. Delivery dates can move if artwork is not print-ready, if the mockup is not approved within 24 hours, if the cart mixes urgent and standard items, or if the address is outside the regular service area. What to check before approving artwork

The mockup is a graphical representation of the idea, not a photograph of the finished mug, so treat it as a check on content and layout rather than on exact colour and placement. Before you click approve:

• Every name, date and spelling is correct, including on variable-data orders where each mug differs.
• Faces and key subjects are inside the safe area and not near the top or bottom margin.
• Nothing important sits where the strip meets the handle gap.
• Text is large enough to read at actual size. Fine text under about 8 pt gets soft in sublimation.
• Your design does not rely on gold, metallic or an exact brand colour, none of which sublimation reproduces.
• If white appears in the design, it is the mug body showing through, which matters on black and frosted mugs.
• On the black mug with a white printable panel, printed black and the ceramic black will not match. If your design needs them to match, change the design.
